Why does UVB lighting matter?
Many reptile species rely on ultraviolet-B (UVB) light exposure to synthesize vitamin D3 in their skin, a process similar to what happens in human skin with sun exposure. Vitamin D3 is essential for absorbing calcium from the diet; without adequate UVB, a reptile can eat a calcium-appropriate diet and still be unable to use that calcium properly. This chain — UVB, vitamin D3, calcium absorption — is the foundation of healthy bone development in UVB-dependent species.
How often do UVB bulbs need to be replaced?
UVB output fades over the life of a bulb well before the bulb stops producing visible light, which means a bulb can look perfectly normal while providing little or no usable UVB. Manufacturer replacement schedules — commonly every six to twelve months depending on the bulb type — should be followed regardless of whether the light still appears bright, and a UVB meter can help confirm output between replacements.
What about heat and basking areas?
Most reptiles need a temperature gradient within the enclosure, with a warmer basking area and a cooler retreat area, so the animal can move between zones to regulate its body temperature. Basking spot temperatures and the overall gradient should match the specific needs of the species being kept, since requirements vary widely between a desert species and a tropical forest species. UVB output and basking heat are often provided by fixtures placed close enough for the animal to bask directly beneath them, following the bulb manufacturer's distance guidelines.
What role does photoperiod play, and do species differ?
A consistent day-night light cycle (photoperiod) that mimics natural patterns supports normal behavior and hormonal cycles. Desert species generally need higher-intensity UVB and hotter basking temperatures than forest or nocturnal species, which may need lower UVB levels, more shaded retreats, or in some cases little direct UVB at all — husbandry should be tailored to the individual species rather than applied uniformly.
Does glass block UVB?
Ordinary glass and most plastics filter out the large majority of UVB radiation, so a UVB bulb placed outside a glass enclosure, or light passing through a glass or plastic cover, provides little to no usable UVB to the animal inside. Fixtures should be positioned so UVB reaches the animal unobstructed, with only mesh or specifically UVB-transparent covers between the bulb and the basking area.
