What causes metabolic bone disease?
Metabolic bone disease (MBD) develops when a reptile does not get enough calcium, has insufficient vitamin D3 to absorb the calcium it does get, or lacks the UVB exposure needed to synthesize that vitamin D3 in the first place. These three factors are closely linked, and a deficiency in any one of them can lead to the body pulling calcium from the skeleton to maintain other essential functions, weakening bones over time.
What are the signs?
Early signs can be subtle, but as the disease progresses, affected reptiles may develop a soft or rubbery lower jaw, bowed or bent limbs, tremors or muscle twitching, and pathologic fractures from minimal trauma. Lethargy, reduced appetite, and difficulty moving normally are also common. Because bone changes can be advanced before they are obvious externally, any of these signs warrants prompt evaluation.
Who is most at risk?
Juvenile reptiles are particularly vulnerable because they are building skeletal mass rapidly and have high calcium demands relative to their size. Adult females that are actively producing eggs are also at high risk, since egg production draws heavily on the body's calcium reserves. Any husbandry gap in calcium, vitamin D3, or UVB affects these groups fastest and most severely.
How is it diagnosed and treated?
Diagnosis is based on history, physical examination findings, and often imaging to assess bone density and identify fractures; bloodwork may also be used to evaluate calcium levels. Treatment addresses both the immediate deficiency, sometimes including calcium supplementation and, in severe cases, supportive care for fractures or weakness, and — critically — correction of the husbandry conditions that caused the problem, since medical treatment alone will not resolve the disease if diet, calcium supplementation, and UVB exposure are not fixed at the same time.
Can it be prevented?
Metabolic bone disease is fully preventable with appropriate husbandry: a calcium-appropriate diet, calcium and vitamin D3 supplementation matched to the species' needs, and correctly functioning UVB lighting with basking temperatures suited to the animal. Because the disease is so directly tied to preventable husbandry factors, most cases can be avoided entirely with attention to these basics from the start.
